USA Made Damascus Steel Bar Stock for Knife Making
Shop USA made Damascus steel bar stock for making your own knife blades, including 416-layer carbon Damascus in random raindrop, ladder, vertical ladder and sine-wave patterns plus a hand forged 120-layer Gambler Custom™ bar. Bars run from .075 to .190 inch thick, and every one ships ready for you to heat treat.
Most bars here are USA Carbon Damascus, a 416-layer stack of 52100, 5160, 203E and 15N20 steels folded five times. Each USA Carbon bar is named by its thickness, width and length in inches, and the photo on its listing is the actual bar you receive. Their widths run from 1.0 to 1.875 inches and lengths from 8 to 17.75 inches. Raindrop and ladder patterns make up most of the selection, with vertical ladder, sine-wave and plain random bars mixed in. This steel suits any style of knife, so pick the size that fits your design.
The USA Carbon listings walk through the heat treat. Heat the blade evenly until a magnet releases it, or soak it at 1550°F in an oven, then quench tip-first in light oil and temper at 350°F for an hour. Properly heat treated, the steel carries a 59-61 Rockwell hardness. To etch, degrease with acetone and dip the blade in ferric chloride cut with distilled water or white vinegar to bring up the layers. Neutralize with baking soda and warm water, dry it quickly, and keep it lightly oiled or waxed.
The Gambler Custom™ bar is hand forged in the USA by steel maker Payton Pelland from 1084 high carbon steel and 15N20 high nickel steel, which forms the shiny layers. It is 14 inches long, 2 inches wide and .187 inch thick, and comes normalized, annealed and ready for hardening.
