Knife Making Drill Bits and Cordless Drills
Shop drills and drill bits for knife builds, from a #55 drill sized for 1/16-inch detent balls in folders to HSS step drills that cut a screw's pilot hole and head recess in one pass. Carbide spade drills handle hardened blades and tangs, and Milwaukee® M18™ Compact combos add cordless power to the bench.
At 0.052 inches (1.32 mm), the #55 bit drills the hole that seats a folder's detent ball, which helps the lock engage smoothly and reliably. The HSS step drills come in 19 sizes, including ones matched to 0-80, 1-72 and 2-56 screws, 2-56 titanium screws and a slotted-post head recess. A brad-point tip keeps the start centered in wood, bone, carbon fiber, G10® and phenolic resin scales, leaving a clean seat for Corby bolts, Loveless-style fasteners and socket head or button head screws.
Made in the U.S.A. from solid carbide, the spade drills come in eight diameters from 3/64 inch to 3/8 inch and create or enlarge holes in hardened blades, tangs and guards, including acceptor holes for coil spring tips in automatic knife conversions. Lubricate with light oil and let the drill cut at its own pace. The Milwaukee® M18™ Compact kits run brushless motors on REDLITHIUM™ batteries and come as a drill plus impact driver combo or an impact driver combo, with batteries, chargers and storage included.
Taps, files and abrasives have their own pages under Knife Tools. If your handle uses more than one style of screw or bolt, send us a message and we can help work out the step drill sizes.
