Start by drawing around the handle profile using a marker.



Saw out the scales leaving plenty of material around the profile. Sand the sides flat that will be placed against the handle tang

Clamp the first scale to the tang and drill all the way thru the wood with a 1/8” drill, using the tang holes as a guide. Repeat with the second scale.

Chuck a small countersink drill in your hand drill and lightly countersink all the holes on the insides of the scales.



The wood will swell, making the holes tight. To loosen up the holes, chuck up your 1/8”drill bit and ream the holes out by passing the drill all the way thru each set of holes by hand. Don’t worry; the drill will automatically follow the holes. This is necessary to prevent cracking the scales when the pins are set

Saw the pins about 1/8” longer than the width of the handle and install the pins. File or grind the profile of the scales to match the tang.

Remove the scales and place them together using two pins as shown. Now finish the profile at the front of the handle. This must be done before installing the scales because it cannot be done later without marring the finish on the blade.

Coat all pieces with 2-part epoxy, install the pins and clamp securely for at least 8 hours. Use a piece of paper towel soaked in denatured alcohol and a toothpick to remove squeeze out on the front of the handle and the blade. Do this again 30 minutes later.

Sand and polish the scales.
