Knife Making Taps, Thread Dies and Tapping Tools
Shop taps, thread dies and pilot drills for the threads that hold a knife together, from tapped liners, bolsters and clip holes to fine-thread pivots and screws cut on rod stock. Tap/drill combo sets, a 33-piece tap and die kit with case, a straight tap handle and a #43 detent ball drill are also stocked.
Clean internal threads start with a correctly sized hole. The Tap/Drill Combo Sets pair a spiral point M2 HSS tap with its matching M35 cobalt drill in a two-section locking case, in six standard sizes from 0-80 to 8-32 and four metric sizes. The 0-80 Tap is packed the same way, paired with a 0.0468-inch drill. For threading liners, bolsters, handle scales and pocket clip holes, high-speed steel taps come in 10-80, 8-32, 2mm and 3mm. Pilot drills are sold to match 10-80, 8-32, 8-80 and 2.5mm taps.
For outside threads, the ground HSS Thread Dies cut 2-80, 4-80, 8-80 and 10-80 threads on rod stock for pivots, custom screws and standoffs, and their fine pitch allows close adjustment and resists loosening. The 33-piece Tap & Die Kit holds ten M2 HSS taps, ten matching dies and ten M35 cobalt pilot drills in standard and metric sizes, plus tap and die handles, in a hard-shell locking case. The 7-inch straight tap handle grips taps with 1/8-inch to 3/8-inch shanks. Folder builders setting 3/32-inch detent balls can use the 0.089-inch #43 drill.
Tell our team the screw you are building around, and we will match a tap and pilot drill to it. For step drills, needle files and sharpening gear, browse the main Knife Tools page.
