Mustang Lockback Folder

---------------------

Recommended tools:
#45 (.082) drill
#39 (.099) drill
5/32 drill
1/8 drill

Small countersink bit
#5 Torx screwdriver
Hand files
Ball peen hammer
Bench vise
Small drill press
Belt sander (if possible)

---------------------

This set contains white quince scales. The first thing we’ll do is to fasten the bolsters to the liners as shown below.

Clamp a scale and liner together as shown; making sure the scale is tight against the shoulder on the bolster. Then drill all the way thru the holes already in the liner using a #45(.082) drill. Support the scale on a wooden block as shown. Do the same with the other liner and scale.

Now drill thru the holes with a #99 (.099) drill for the screw body clearance.

Drill part way into each hole using a 1/8” drill. These holes will accommodate the heads of the screws. Try a scale screw in a hole and make sure the head goes deep enough to let the screw threads extend through the backside enough to engage the tapped holes in the liners.

This is what you should have after drilling and placing the screws into the liners. The scales are snug up to the bolsters and there is excess wood left all around the profile. Now lightly countersink the holes on the outside of the scales.

Place a pin thru the pivot hole in the first liner. Put a washer on the pin… then the blade, the second washer, and the other liner. Carefully peen both sides of the pivot pin. Keep swinging the blade as you peen, being careful to remove all extra play, but not binding the blade. File or grind the pin flush with the liners on both sides.

Place two pins thru the liners and the back spacer. Peen the two pins from both sides securely. File or grind the peened heads flush with the outsides of the liners.

File or grind a point on one of your longer pins. Place the back spring between the liners and line up the pin holes as closely as you can. Place the knife between your vise jaws as shown and compress the spring. Now use your long pin and tap it all the way thru the assembly.

The center pin has been sawed and filed flush with the liner on both sides. This is how your knife should look now. A drop of oil on the pivot and back spring might be a good idea.

And it should look like this with the scales and bolsters attached. Remove the bolsters so they won’t get scratched. File or grind and sand the scales to fit all around and make a slight taper on the scales where they butt up to the bolsters.

Coat or soak the scales with a good wood hardener.

Put your scales on the knife and file or grind the complete profile all the way around to blend together all the parts of the knife. Finish sand and polish the scales.

The white quince scales sure look nice, don’t they?
