Assembling the KnifeKits.com Bearclaw Trapper Kit
Using Jigged Bone Scales

BCT35

------------------------------------------
Tools Recommended
 Hammer
 Small drill press
 #45 (.082), #39 (.0995), #8 (.199), #36 (.106) drills
Countersink bit
 Saw
Belt sander
---------------------------------------

Start by laying the scales on the liners and draw a line around the liner. Saw the scales out roughly, leaving plenty of stock all around.

Clamp the scale to the liner with the scale tight against the shoulder on the bolster. Use a #45 drill to drill thru the two smallest holes in the liner.  Put two of the smallest pins thru the holes to hold alignment while you drill the rest of the holes. Then drill thru the remaining two pin holes using a #39 drill. Lastly, drill the lanyard hole using a #8 drill.

Use a countersink bit to put a small countersink in all the holes on the insides of the scales. Sand the scales flat on the inside.

File the heads flush on the inside of the liners and sand flat

Peen over the ends of the smallest pins inside the liners.

Put your pivot pin in your hand drill and file a point on one end.

Put the first blade in place and insert the pointed pin as you pry the blade upward. Add the second blade and pry it upward toward the spine as you tap the pin all the way thru.

Saw the pins off flush except for the pivot pin. Leave it about one pin diameter longer on each side to give it room to form a head. File or grind the handle all over. Blend together all the surfaces and form the scales to suit.

Peen over the pivot pin, moving from one side to the other.  Keep moving the blades until they are snug without binding.
File, grind and sand the bolsters and the complete handle.  You may wish to add a small drop of super glue on the scale pins.
