The flat head sits flush for a clean surface, and its 0.250 inch length is measured to the top of the head. The button head is a touch wider and domed, and its 0.250 inch thread is measured under the head.

When depth is limited, the shallow socket head needs less room and less surface removal, a style suited to modern production knives. It has a 0.218 inch head over the same 0.250 inch thread measured under the head.
