Knife Guards for Hidden Tang Knife Making

Shop knife guards for hidden tang knives, from cast nickel silver, bronze and brass designs such as Bear Paw, Eagle Claw, Celtic Knot and Floral Scroll to stainless steel ovals and C and S patterns. Each product name gives the measurements and the slot size, and most slots can be modified to suit your tang.

Most of these guards are hand cast in nickel silver, bronze or brass with a deep slipover cavity for fitting the handle. The Bear Paw has a fur motif on its sides, the Eagle Claw, Double Eagle Claw and Wolf Paw carry feather work, and the Pike, Screaming Hawk and Viper show an animal head. Tops are smooth on the Eagle Claw and Warrior Crest, stippled on the Braided Knot and Celtic Knot, and engraved on the Floral Scroll and Scallop guards. Floral Scroll VII and VIII each come in bronze and nickel silver at the same size. The Vine & Bezel is a single-finger guard, while the plain Dagger guard is meant for dagger builds.

Harvey Dean designed two of these guards, an Oval and an S Pattern, and both are heat-treated, engravable 420 stainless with a satin finish. A front recess on the top and bottom of their slot clears the radius where a welded, CNC'd or sawed tang meets the blade. The C Pattern, machined from solid stainless, and the two Universal Series ovals accept mirror polish, satin, file work or engraving. The Universal ovals come in 3.0 and 2.70 inch lengths, are made in the USA from 440 stainless or brass, and can be profile sanded to fit your design.

For a pommel to close the other end of the handle, or a matching guard and pommel set, see guards, pommels and sets. If two slots look close, send us your tang width and thickness and we will suggest the closer fit.
