15n20 high carbon steel has become increasingly more popular over the last few decades. This alloy steel is made in Germany. 15n20 contains high nickel content, which adds to its versatility and durability. It is a reasonably inexpensive steel and can be used in a variety of knife-making applications. It is also relatively easy to work with and is popular for practice and prototyping. Depending on how it is heat treated, 15n20 can achieve a Rockwell hardness range of 60-65 HRC. 15n20 has excellent edge retention, among the highest in the high carbon steel family. 15n20 is often found in Damascus steel blends because of its toughness, hardness, and edge retention. Because it is not stainless steel, it will corrode if not properly cared for. Regular wiping, cleaning, and lubricating are recommended for long shelf life.

Carbon 0.75% – Increases hardness, edge retention, and wear/corrosion/abrasion resistance.
Nickel 2% – Increases toughness.
Manganese 0.4% – Increases hardness and edge retention.
Silicon 0.03% – Increases overall strength.
Phosphorus 0.02% – Improves overall strength, hardness, and machinability.
Sulfur 0.01% – Increases machinability and toughness.
